Curriculum Intent:
At Sir John Hunt we want students to enjoy learning Spanish and to develop their confidence throughout Key Stage 3 by focusing on phonics, grammar and relevant vocabulary. By building the foundation of language learning, as well as igniting a desire to continue learning, we will empower all our students to be able to continue language learning in greater depth at Key Stage 4 and beyond, opening myriad opportunities for them within the global community. As students progress from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4, they will increase their cultural awareness of Spanish- speaking countries and communities.
As the National Curriculum states:
“Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.”
At SJH, our aims are:
• to equip our students with the knowledge and understanding of how to be successful language learning practitioners;
• to make our students become competitive players in the global jobs market;
• to ensure that the vast majority of our students opt to continue with MFL at GCSE;
• to make maximum use of the latest courses and teaching methods, in order to engage and motivate our students.
